Süddeutsche Zeitung reported that Wirecard appointed Tolentino as a trustee in 2019 to open six accounts with BDO Unibank Inc. and Bank of Philippine Islands. The bank accounts will hold in escrow 1.9 billion euros ($2.1 billion) of the company’s funds.
“He (Tolentino) is said to have invested 393.5 million euros for Wirecard UK & Ireland Ltd. For Wirecard Technology GmbH it was 400.5 million. 30 million for Wirecard AG, 20 million for Wirecard Sales International GmbH and finally almost 1.1 billion for the subsidiary Cardsystem Middle East FZ LLC,” the paper said.
Süddeutsche Zeitung questioned why Wirecard tapped Tolentino for the transaction when he was a “dishonorably dismissed official.”
President Rodrigo Duterte fired Tolentino in 2018 lobbied for the Mindanao Rail project with the backing of the Chief Executive’s sister.
Meanwhile, BDO and BPI have denied Wirecard is their client, much less receiving the money that the German financial technology company supposedly held in escrow. The two banks said they are investigating the matter.
