In January, we reported that Suzuki has started exporting its Jimny sub-compact off-roader sourced from their joint-venture plant with Maruti in India. At the time, Suzuki confirmed that Latin America would be the first export market followed by the Middle East and Africa. Well, now we can include the Philippines to that list as well.
Brought into the country with no fanfare, Suzuki Philippines has shifted the sourcing of the Jimny to India perhaps as a way to skirt the DTI safeguard bond. Moreover, logistically it makes more sense because Suzuki Philippines currently sources the S-Presso and Dzire from India as well. It could result in shorter waiting times too.
Indian-assembled Jimnys are already at authorized Suzuki dealers. According to dealers, there’s no discernable difference except when you open the hood. From there, it’s very clear that the VIN plate indicates Maruti Suzuki as the manufacturer.
Currently, only the high-trim GLX variant is being sourced from India and keep their CBU Japan prices: P 1.205 million for the monotone and P 1.215 million for the two-tone. This is will be joined shortly by the base Jimny GL variant as well.
