Will it be a yes? Guevarra nominated to SC anew

Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Menardo Guevarra has again been nominated as justice of the Supreme Court (SC).

“This is a man justice,” read retired Sandiganbayan justice Raoul Victorino’s letter recommendation to the Judicial Bar and Council (JBC).

“A true embodiment and advocate of justice in our Republic. In a literal sense, too, he being the chief of the Department of Justice,” Victorino added.

Retired justice cited Guevarra has worked as Deputy Executive Secretary for Legal Affairs (DESLA) for the Office of the President, Oversight Representative of the Executive Secretary, accredited arbitrator of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and had been part of the legal team in the arbitration case which the country won before the Permanent Court of Arbitration concerning the West Philippine Sea.

“In my decades of public service until today, I have known the incumbent DOJ Secretary Guevarra as a dedicated public servant with an unblemished record,” said Victorino.

“I have known Secretary Guevarra to be a person of proven competence, integrity, probity and independence and his sense of patriotism through his socio-civic engagements. I believe that he possesses the necessary credentials, professional experience and the motivation to discharge the duties as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court,” he also cited.

Victorino made the nomination as the JBC has begun seeking applicants who will fill the post that will be open up upon the Sept. 18 retirement of SC Justice Jose Reyes.

Last year, Victorino nominated Guevarra to an SC vacancy that was opened upon to promotion of Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta.
