Abante to Manila Water, Maynilad: Ensure running water for Metro Manila residents

House Minority Leader Bienvenido Abante Jr. urged the two Metro Manila water concessionaires to ensure running water so the public can protect themselves from the Covid-19 virus.

The Manila lawmaker said he had received reports that residents in several barangays in Bacolod and Sta. Mesa did not have running water after a Maynilad pipe burst open in his district.

“The residents in these barangays currently have not had running water since Thursday, and in some areas the leaking water has caused flooding,” Abante said.

He pointed out that “access to running water is always essential, but it is even more critical now that we are in the middle of a pandemic.”

“Some of the most basic precautions we urge our population to take in order to prevent them from contracting and spreading the virus––like washing hands regular and bathing when they return from going outside––require running water,” Abante said.

“Given this, water concessionaires like Maynilad need to immediately respond and repair damage to their pipes. It is not an exaggeration to say that the longer they take to address these problems, the more lives are exposed to health risks,” he said.

“Sana tutukan nila ang mga bagay na ito. In dense population areas like Manila, hygiene plays a role in controlling the spread of disease––and ready access to water is crucial to maintain proper hygiene,” Abante said.
