House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano on Friday reiterated his commitment to honor his “gentleman’s agreement” to yield the speakership to Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco after 15 months.
But he reminded Velasco of his condition that the turnover would not involve replacing the chairmanships and other key positions in the chamber, a crucial point that would be closely watched in the next few months.
“Yes, end of October or start of November yung 15 months ko,” Cayetano said in a CNN Philippines interview.
Asked if that was a “sure thing,” the Taguig lawmaker said: “Well, I haven’t seen anything that will make it change basta’t ang akin ang commitment ko kay Presidente, sa administration, and of course first and foremost to God and our people, so I told the President, you are the head of the coalition, you will decide this.”
He added: “So ang commitment ko sa kanya eh. Hindi ko naman commitment kay Martin o kay Lord or to whoever else but wala naman kaming pinag-uusapan differently, we’re just quietly working hard.”
But Cayetano reiterated his condition to keep the other incumbent House leaders to their posts.
“And then preparing for that, ang akin lang the same thing I told Cong. Velasco at the start, ayusin na natin lahat ng chairmanship kasi kung buong Congress ang magbabago, wala pa ngang Covid noon, maaapektuhan talaga,” he said.
“Pero kung ako lang naman papalitan, I think naman the House can be as productive pa rin or maybe even more productive depende sa mga members ng House at support nila sa Speaker,” he said.
