President Rodrigo Duterte called on the police to “be more strict” in arresting those who violate quarantine protocols amid the ongoing coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.
“We’ll have to ask our police to be more strict. So hulihin talaga. A little shame would put them on notice forever,” Duterte said in a pre-taped broadcast aired early Tuesday.
“If you are brought to a police station and detained there, that will give you a lesson for all time,” he also said.
The President pointed out that wearing masks can significantly reduce the risk of spreading the virus.
“We don’t have any qualms in arresting people. Under ordinary times, a simple violation of not wearing a mask seems to be trivial, and social distancing, all of these things,” according to him.
“But, during times of health issues, you can (be arrested) because it can be a serious crime, transmitting your… the theory is you are the carrier, that is why you should wear a mask so as not to pass on the infection to the other guy,” he added.
As of Monday afternoon, the Department of Health reported the total number of Covid-19 cases at 68,898.
