Much remains to be done: Congress asked to swiftly pass key pieces of legislation

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday urged Congress for the quick passage of legislative measures that will uplift the lives of Filipinos.

In his fifth State of the Nation Address, Duterte thanked lawmakers for supporting his administration’s programs.

He also praised them for being “very productive,” but asserted that “much more remains to be done.”

Specifically, the President cited the urgent need to pass the National Housing Development bill and the Rental Housing Subsidy bill.

“These will enable all Filipinos, regardless of social status, to live in decent homes where their families can lead meaningful lives,” according to him.

Duterte likewise called for amendments to the Continuing Professional Development Act of 2016 and the passage of the Nursing Education Act and the law instituting the Medical Reserve Corps.

His other proposals include the creation of the National Disease Prevention and Management Authority, the Department of Disaster Resilience, and the Boracay Island Development Authority; and the passage of National Land Use Act and a law for the Unified System of Separation, Retirement and Pension of the Military and Uniformed Personnel.

The Chief Executive also stressed the need to modernize the Bureau of Fire Protection and the Bureau of Immigration; and pass the bill establishing the Coconut Farmers’ Trust Fund, the Rural Agricultural and Fisheries Development Financing System Act, and the Internet Transactions Act.
