Malacañang hoped that the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) experiment on the use of convalescent blood plasma to treat people with coronavirus disease (Covid-19) will yield positive results and be the Philippines’ contribution to vaccine development efforts.
The DOST was set to start its state-funded study on the use of plasma from recovered Covid-19 patients as a mode of therapy for those infected with the virus, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque announced in a statement Saturday.
Roque said the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital will facilitate research, with funding support from the DOST.
“We note that the study is banking on the use of convalescent plasma taken from the blood of patients who have recovered from the infection, and therefore contains neutralizing antibodies against the virus,” he added.
There is currently no vaccine available to prevent infection with the Covid-19 virus that had killed more than 500,000 people worldwide.
