Philippines taking a whole-of-government approach vs swine flu virus

By Prince Golez

The government will implement a “whole-of-nation approach” to prevent the spread of the new strain of G4-H1N1 or the swine flu virus.

This, after researchers in China discovered a new strain of swine flu that could become a potential pandemic virus.

The Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases approved the recommendation to set up inter-agency surveillance mechanisms for swine farms and workers, especially those who are regularly exposed to pigs, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque announced Tuesday.

In his virtual presser aired on state-run PTV-4, Roque said the Department of Health, Department of Agriculture, and the Bureau of Customs were directed to “strictly” implement Republic Act 10611 or the Food Safety Act of 2013.

In September 2019, the Philippines confirmed that African swine fever – highly contagious and fatal to pigs but harmless to humans – caused the deaths of pig herds in the capital Manila and surrounding areas.
