ABS-CBN might fail to secure a new franchise under President Rodrigo Duterte’s successor if the network will remain in the Lopezes’ control, Camarines Sur Rep. Luis Raymund Villafuerte said Friday (July 17).
Villafuerte, one of the 70 lawmakers who voted to deny ABS-CBN’s franchise application, urged the Lopezes to sell the company to improve its chances of returning to air.
“Bottomline, my suggestion to the Lopez family, they just sell the corporation. If they really love the 11,000 employees or more and they really want to serve the Filipino people, ibenta na lang iyong kumpanya,” he said in an interview over ANC’s “Headstart.”
Villafuerte said the lawmakers who voted against ABS-CBN could do the same thing if they were reelected in 2022 unless the network’s owners are changed.
“Sabi nga, we’ll remember iyong mga bumoto vs. ABS-CBN, di namin sila iboboto for 2022. But the risk is, if they win again and ABS-CBN applies again with the same ownership structure, they might experience the same scenario where they will be denied [franchise],” he said.
Villafuerte said the Lopezes would remain wealthy even without ABS-CBN as they have other businesses.
“This is just a suggestion, tutal, the Lopez family earned billions, they have other companies, First Gen, Rockwell,” he said. “The decision is up to them.”
