Alanganin na, pabigat pa! Ping laments PhilHealth corruption worsening govt tightrope act due to COVID-fueled recession

It’s bad enough the government has to do a tightrope act due to a recession caused by the COVID pandemic. It’s much wose that corruption continues at the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth), Sen. Panfilo Lacson said Thursday.

Lacson said it is revolting that amid the potential no-win situation, billions of pesos in taxpayers’ money is lost to corruption in the agency.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has placed the government in a very precarious situation as in a tightrope-like balancing act between health and economic issues, which presents a no win-all situation,” he said in a statement.

He added it is “revolting” to discover so much unabated corruption in PhilHealth involving billions, which he said “could have been put into good use in adequately addressing at least the issue of health.”

But Lacson also said he wants to believe earlier statements by the country’s economic managers that strong economic fundamentals may help the country get through this.

“I would like to believe, as often expressed by the country’s economic managers, that we continue to benefit from our strong economic fundamentals which can pull us through this crisis, until such time that a vaccine that has guaranteed efficacy is finally developed to address the pandemic,” he said.
