Bayan Muna: Rev-gov just another ploy to keep Duterte and his allies in power

Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Carlos Zarate on Sunday said the supposed initiative for a revolutionary government is “just another ploy in the arsenal of schemes — like Martial law declaration, charter change and term extension — of the pro-Duterte clique to consolidate and extend its hold to power.”

“Apparently, the Duterte clique and its allies realized that their Cha-cha move has difficulty taking off, thus, it is once again foisting now this dubious rev-gov scheme by mobilizing it minions so that President Duterte can have more draconian powers that will allow them to remain in power indefinitely,” said the Deputy Minority leader.

“Recall that this rev-gov initiative was a brainchild of people from the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) about two or three years ago,” Zarate said.

“This is just another waste of resources especially in this time of severe crisis aggravated by the corona virus pandemic,” said the progressive solon.

“The people should vigorously oppose this anti-democratic initiative, especially since clearly its main objective is the mere perpetuation in power of the incompetent and tyrannical rule of the present administration,” Zarate said.

The “People’s National Coalition for Revolutionary Government and Charter Change” gathered at Clark Freeport on Saturday to urge Filipinos “to join us in the establishment of a revolutionary government for a period not exceeding June 30, 2022, and the adoption of a new Constitution.”

The group was led by former Makati councilor Bobby Brillante.

It said it would seek more powers for Duterte, apart from his powers under the Constitution, “to eliminate the ills of society” and purge the government of corrupt officials.
