President Rodrigo Duterte urged state forces to “fight hard” if the insurgents cannot settle the terms of peace with the government.
“If we cannot really agree, then we fight and we fight hard hanggang magkaubusan na. Maybe by that time, kung ubos na ang lahat, wala ng giyera,” Duterte told soldiers on Sunday during his visit to the site that left scores dead and injured in Jolo, Sulu.
“Sa ngayon, hindi ko mapigil ang mga sundalo ko kasi may mission sila and the mission is to crush the insurgents. And the insurgents, ang mission nila is for the greater glory of Allah,” he also said.
The Chief Executive believes that the country’s insurgency problem will continue to persist, citing the decades-long sense of resentment among rebel groups.
“May dalawang taon pa ako, ewan ko kung ano ang magawa ko talaga. But you know when you go into a fighting may galit na ‘yan. Mahirap ito aregluhin kasi lahat may sugat na sa puso. And it would take more than a generation to do this,” according to him.
Two explosions rocked Jolo, Philippines on August 24, killing 15 people and wounded dozens of others.
