Duterte won’t meddle with probe on Echanis’ death: Palace

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte is distancing himself from the investigation into the death of National Democratic Front consultant Randy Echanis who was murdered inside his apartment in Quezon City on Monday

Both the Philippine National Police and National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) are already investigating this particular matter, Duterte’s spokesman Harry Roque said in an interview with The Source Wednesday.

“It’s being investigated now. It’s not just the police investigating it, it’s the NBI now through the Department of Justice,” according to Roque.

“On matters where there’s a police investigation or criminal investigations being conducted, it’s very difficult for anyone including the President to interfere. So, [the President] will allow the process to continue,” he said.

“I think the President as a lawyer will allow investigators to proceed unhampered,” he added.

Erlinda, wife of Echanis, earlier appealed for Duterte to intervene as she urged the police to immediately release the peasant activist’s remains.
