Gyms, Internet shops remain closed under GCQ

By Prince Golez

Gyms, Internet cafes, and review centers will remain prohibited under general community quarantine (GCQ), according to Malacañang.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque made the clarification Wednesday following the announcement of Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez that said businesses can resume operations in GCQ areas.

“We have not yet allowed the operations of gyms, internet cafes, as well as review centers and tutorial centers. They will still be not allowed,” Roque said in an interview with CNN Philippines’ The Source.

“There’s a bit of confusion here because the (Department of Trade and Industry) issued guidelines that these businesses are allowed. But actually, before MECQ was imposed, the Cabinet, in an emergency meeting presided by (Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea), decided to temporarily suspend the opening of these businesses,” he added.

Lopez had said that fitness centers, sports facilities, and Internet cafes can resume at 30 percent operation capacity.

On Monday, President Rodrigo Duterte approved the recommendation to downgrade the modified enhanced community quarantine status in the National Capital Region and the provinces of Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal to GCQ.
