Palace on airing Duterte speech live: ‘We are talking about it’

To dispel rumors about the health condition of President Rodrigo Duterte, Malacañang on Thursday said that it is considering the live airing of his speeches.

“We are talking about it,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said, reiterating that Duterte will inform the public if he has a serious illness.

Roque likewise defended their decision to edit out certain parts of Duterte’s speeches.

“We are editing it because it’s not just an address to the nation, it’s also a meeting with select members of the Cabinet. We edit out the portions which are not for public consumption because, as I said, you cannot make good policy just on the basis that they are popular policies. That is why there is executive privilege,” he explained.

Duterte, whose health has been subject to speculation, had revealed that his doctor has advised him to stop drinking liquor as his Barrett’s esophagus was “nearing stage one cancer.”
