Palace: Philippines, Thailand are ‘fierce’ competitors in tourism industry

By Prince Golez

A Thai newspaper calling the Philippines the “Land of Covid-19” is motivated by Thailand’s “struggling” tourism industry, Malacañang said Wednesday.

Thailand, according to Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, regards the Philippines as a “fierce” competitor in tourism.

“There’s no way we can control what our neighbors say. Don’t forget that we are fierce competitors with Thailand when it comes to tourism,” Roque said in an interview with The Source.

“We are the closest of friends but we are also closest competitors as far as economic interests are concerned because we’re dealing with exact the same commodities and in the case of Thailand, it’s tourism,” he added.

On August 9, the Thai Rath newspaper reported that 165 Filipino teachers arrived from the “land of Covid-19” at Suvarnabhumi Airport to cope with teacher shortages in Thailand.

As of Tuesday, the Department of Health reported a cumulative total of 139,538 Covid-19 cases in the country, with 68,432 recoveries and 2,312 casualties.
