Subaru has shown off the second-generation Levorg sports tourer in Japan, and it brings the company’s newest turbocharged engine along with a promise of bolder styling and even more enhanced dynamics.
Across all variants, the 2021 Levorg is powered by Subaru’s brand-new 1.8-liter direct injection turbo (DIT) engine making a healthy 177 horsepower at 5,200 to 5,600 rpm and 300 Nm of torque from 1,600 to 3,600 rpm. This is mated to a Lineartronic CVT driving all four wheels courtesy of Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system.
The Levorg also migrates to the Subaru Global Platform which promises enhanced driving dynamics along with improved safety. Higher grade models also receive a ZF-developed electronically controlled damper system—the first Subaru to receive such a feature. The dampers are tied into the Drive Mode Select system which tunes the steering and even EyeSight system using one of four modes: Comfort, Normal, Sport, and Sport+. It can even be customized with an Individual mode.
Being the first Subaru production vehicle designed under the concept of “BOLDER,” the all-new Levorg features a more striking design with angular wheel arches, cut-out head-and taillights, and wheel sizes in either 17- or 18-inches (215/50R17 or 225/45 R18 tires installed). It also manages to maintain the trademark hood scoop despite stricter pedestrian impact regulations.
For the first time, an STI Sport variant joins the line-up from the get-go and this one gets all sorts of STI styling enhancements including a unique front grille, bumper, and larger mufflers.
Inside, the 2021 Levorg gets a decidedly more high-tech cabin thanks to its all-digital cockpit. The driver is treated to a 12.3-inch full color LCD meter display, while at the center, is a portrait-style 11.6-inch center display for the infotainment system and vehicle settings, including climate control.
Features found in the all-new Levorg include a Steering Responsive Headlights (SRH), camera-based rear view mirror, power driver seat, hands-free power tailgate (using not a kick-sensor, but by touching the Subaru logo) and more. It also has a larger cargo hold with a total capacity of 561 liters (492 liters plus a 69 liter sub-floor trunk).
Front and center though is the newest Subaru EyeSight with 360-degree sensing capability. Not only does this offer the usual EyeSight driver assist features such as autonomous emergency braking and adaptive cruise control, but it adds Emergency Lane Keep Assist as well.
An even more advanced version called EyeSight X adds autonomous driving capabilities thanks to the use of 3D high-precision map data. Features here include hands-off assist during traffic jams, active lane change assist, and automatic speed control in curves and toll gates.
Subaru says that Japan market pre-orders for the all-new Levorg start in October with pricing and availability announced closer to that date.
