Muntinlupa City Representative Ruffy Biazon is thankful for President Duterte’s strong declaration of the country’s ownership of the West Philippine Sea before the United Nations.
The President recently made history when he asserted the country’s legal victory against China in the South China Sea conflict in his first-ever speech to the UN General Assembly.
For Biazon, the President’s declaration showed the country was standing up to China without resorting to war over the territorial conflict.
“Stressing the Philippines’ sovereign rights in the West Philippine Sea by virtue of the Arbitral Ruling at the United Nations is a way of standing up to China without going to war. Thank you for this, Mr. President,” Biazon tweeted on Sept. 23.
In his UN address Wednesday, Duterte said the arbitral award, which nullified China’s claims over the South China Sea, was part of international law. He said the government would reject attempts to undermine the arbitral decision by the Hague-based tribunal in favor of the Philippines.
