Human rights lawyer Chel Diokno is pushing for the conduct of the country’s national and local elections in 2022 in adherence to the Constitution.
Diokno asked lawmakers to focus on solutions to ensure the country’s elections will push through instead of ways on how to prolong their stay in power. He said other countries are trying to find solutions on how to safely proceed with their elections given the coronavirus pandemic.
“Ang ibang bansa, nakahanap ng paraan para ituloy at gawing ligtas ang eleksyon. Sana yung mga kinatawan natin sa Kongreso e solusyon ang isipin, imbis na kung paano patagalin ang sarili sa pwesto,” Diokno tweeted on September 25.
He said the upcoming elections, when voters elect a new president and other government officials, are the bedrock of the country’s democracy.
“Eleksyon ang pundasyon ng demokrasya natin, at dapat matuloy ito ayon sa batas,” he said.
Diokno made the comment after Pampanga 2nd Rep. Mikey Arroyo floated the possible postponement of the 2022 elections due to the coronavirus pandemic.
