The government has never been remiss in its responsibility to prevent human rights abuses, Malacañang said.
Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque made the comment after United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet called on the Duterte administration to revoke policies and rhetoric that resulted in serious human rights violations.
“With all due respect to Madam Bachelet as a former President of Chile, she knows that we have domestic institutions to promote accountability,” Roque said in a televised briefing Thursday.
The country, he added, has local institutions that hold officials responsible for their actions.
“We will rely on these domestic institutions and as of now all institutions, whether be it the DOJ (Department of Justice), the courts, the CHR (Commission on Human Rights) and other remedies are available to those who claim to be victims of human rights violations,” according to him.
“We are not in default of our obligation to provide victims with an adequate domestic remedy,” he added.
