Ito ang kailangan: Ping says President needs consistency instead of resignation vs corruption

Instead of offering to resign, President Rodrigo Duterte can do more against corruption just by being consistent in applying anti-corruption laws, both to friends and foes, Sen. Panfilo Lacson said Tuesday.

Lacson also pointed out Duterte can follow up strong words and warnings with political will and concrete actions.

“Instead of resigning, the President only needs to be consistent in applying the anti-graft and corruption laws to both friends and foes,” Lacson said in a statement.

“Strong words and warnings may work, but only when backed by political will and followed by concrete actions. There is no better way,” he added.

On Monday night, Duterte offered to step down from his post due to frustration in fighting corruption.

Duterte also appealed anew to Congress to help him fight corruption, saying he is willing to appear before lawmakers to discuss anti-corruption measures.

Meanwhile, Lacson said Duterte may not need to even appear before a congressional hearing, as the Senate is already proposing to give him “Bayanihan-like” powers to counter red tape in government.

“As for his offer to appear before a congressional hearing, that may not be necessary. In fact, the Senate is already proposing in a bill to give him Bayanihan-like powers to address red tape in government.

Lacson co-authored Senate Bill 1844, authorizing the President to expedite the processing and issuance of national and local permits and licenses, during a time of national emergency.
