Kaninong bright idea ‘yan? Tito Sotto sneers at MTRCB’s plan to regulate Netflix content

Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III sees no need for the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) to regulate content on Netflix and other streaming platforms.

In a radio interview Saturday (September 5), Sotto said Netflix has parental controls that allow a parent or guardian to choose which kinds of programs and movies a child can watch.

He also expressed doubt on how MTRCB would proceed with regulating content on the popular streaming platform.

“Tatlong bagay. Una, gusto kong malaman kaninong bright idea ‘yan, sino sa MTRCB nakaisip niyan. Pangalawa, paano nilang gagawin, kokontakin nila Netflix, sasabihin kailangan dumaan sa MTRCB?” he said.

“Ito ba papasok sa bahay ng mga tao at sasabihin sa mga magulang kung ano ang gagawin sa anak nila. May mga magulang, ‘di naman pwedeng iasa lahat sa gobyerno. Asa Netflix naman, kung gusto mo pangkids, o para sa’yo. Dun lang may remedyo na,” Sotto added.

MTRCB legal chief Jonathan Presquito recently told lawmakers at a hearing that part of its mandate under the law is to regulate content streamed on Netflix, iFlix, and Amazon Prime.
