President Rodrigo Duterte is considering the abolition or privatization of the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (Philhealth), which has been perennially plagued by corruption allegations.
This was shared by Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III following his meeting with Duterte in Malacanang Wednesday (September 16). Sotto was joined in the discussion by Senator Bong Go, House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano and House Majority Leader Ferdinand Martin Romualdez.
“He (Duterte) said he wanted Philhealth abolished or privatized but I said it might be better to wait a few months and see how the new admin performs,” Sotto said in a text message to reporters.
Duterte appointed former NBI chief Dante Gierran to head the Philhealth earlier this month after asking retired general Ricardo Morales to resign due to his poor health and the corruption allegations hounding the state-run health insurer.
Sotto said Duterte also agreed with the bill he filed making the Finance Secretary the ex-officio chairman of the Philhealth board of directors instead of the Health Secretary.
