US Marine Lance Corporal Joseph Scott Pemberton is “extremely grateful” to President Rodrigo Duterte for pardoning him for killing a Filipina transgender in 2014.
Pemberton’s lawyer Rowena Flores shared the American soldier’s statement after his deportation from the Philippines Sunday (September 13).
“Mr. Pemberton wishes to express his deepest gratitude to President Duterte for granting him an absolute pardon. He is extremely grateful for this act of compassion,” the statement read.
Addressing the family of transgender woman Jennifer Laude, Flores said Pemberton “extends his most sincere sympathy” over her death.
“In the years he spent in confinement, he spent much time contemplating the many errors in his ways regarding the night of October 11, 2014. He wishes he had the words to express the depth of his sorrow and regret,” Flores said.
Pemberton was sentenced to six to 10 years in jail for killing Laude but Duterte pardoned him on September 7.
Prior to Duterte’s pardon, an Olongapo court ordered Pemberton’s release on the argument that he already served his sentence due to the good conduct time allowance (GCTA) credits he accumulated while in prison.
