Trillanes skeptical of Duterte’s South China Sea statement in UN address: Just like believing his jet ski promise

Not everyone is blown away by President Duterte’s historic statement on the South China Sea dispute before the United Nations.

Former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV is doubtful about the President’s decision to invoke the country’s arbitral win against China in the territorial conflict during his first-ever address before the United Nations General Assembly.

Trillanes suspected that Duterte won’t walk the talk similar to his old promise to ride the jet ski and plant the Philippine flag at the Spratlys Islands.

“To believe duterte now on his UN statement re WPS, is like believing his jetski campaign promise all over again,” the former lawmaker tweeted on Sept. 23.

Trillanes cautioned the public against falling for Duterte’s latest statement. “Utang na loob, wag kayo patanga-tanga!” he said.

In his first address to the UN assembly, the President stressed the country’s legal victory in the South China Sea dispute with China. He said the award, that rejected China’s sweeping claims over the regional waters, is “now part of international law, beyond compromise and beyond the reach of passing governments to dilute, diminish, or abandon.”

He said the government “firmly rejects attempts to undermine it.”
