Duterte to DOH: Prioritize gov’t-to-gov’t COVID vaccine purchase deal

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte prefers a government-to-government deal for the procurement of coronavirus (Covid-19) vaccines to prevent the risk of corruption.

In a televised address aired Tuesday, Duterte instructed Health Secretary Francisco Duque III to deal with governments on the purchase of Covid-19 vaccines.

“Maganda sana government-to-government ang transaction. Walang corruption, wala lahat kasi government-to-government. I am offering it to China kasi mayroon na sila,” according to the chief executive.

“But my sense, Secretary, is that it should be a government-to-government transaction because it will be good. And tell your men if they are into these negotiations that place first a government-to-government transaction,” he told Duque.

“Ayaw ko ‘yung private persons, magbili tayo sa private Chinese businessmen. Diyan magkakaloko-lokohan eh. Kagaya ngayon, umatras ‘yan kasi hindi yata nakapag-agree doon sa mga terms nila parang partnership to deal with the Philippine government.”

Chinese state-owned pharmaceutical company Sinopharm recently called off plans to hold its coronavirus vaccine clinical trial in the Philippines.

The Department of Science and Technology said the Chinese firm is only interested in supplying vaccines.
