A total of 11 Filipino scientists were included in the prestigious list of Asia’s most outstanding researchers for 2020.
They are Dr. Carlo Arcilla of the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute, and Engr. Robert Dizon of the Metals Industry Research and Development Center, Dr. Raul Destura of the National Institutes of Health of University of the Philippines (UP) Manila, National Scientist Emil Javier, and Alicia Aguinaldo of the University of Santo Tomas.
Filipino honorees also include Emma Sales of the University of Southern Mindanao, Cleotilde Hidalgo-How of UP Manila, the late Alonzo Gabriel of UP Diliman, Raymond Tan and Susan Gallardo of the De La Salle University, and Joselito Chavez of the National Kidney and Transplant Institute.
“To be acknowledged on this list, the honouree must have received a national or international prize in the preceding year for his or her research. Alternatively, he or she must have made a significant scientific discovery or provided leadership in academia or industry,” the Asian Scientist Magazine said.
Arcilla received the Gregorio Y. Zara Award for Basic Research in 2019 for his contributions to mineral resource development, water management, and peaceful applications for nuclear energy in the Philippines.
Dizon received the Mario Cruel Award for Advanced Engineering Technology Application for developing the torque mode configuration for multiple variable frequency drives used in the Automated Guideway Transit System, Hybrid Electric Road Train and Hybrid Electric Train.
Destura was awarded the 2019 Presidential Lingkod Bayan Award for his Biotek-M dengue aquakit for faster, more affordable and accessible dengue diagnosis.
Aguinaldo received the Philippine Federation of Chemistry Societies Shimadzu Achievement Award for Chemical Research for her studies into the anti-tuberculosis and anti-diabetic properties of Philippine plants.
Sales received the LEADS AgriAward for Agricultural Research in 2019 for establishing the first tissue culture and biotechnology laboratory in the Philippines’ Region XII and developing diagnostic tools for the identification of durian, rubber and mango varieties.
Hidalgo-How received the 2019 Dr. Paulo Campos Award for Health Research for her work in the management and diagnosis of tuberculosis among children and adolescents.
Gabriel received the Eduardo A. Quisumbing Medal for his research into microbial stress adaptation on food safety and quality.
Tan received the Gregorio Y. Zara Award for Advanced Research 2019 for his contributions to the development of novel computational techniques for the design of sustainable industrial systems.
Gallardo received the David M. Consunji Award for Engineering Research 2019 for her work in environmental engineering and catalysis, as well as industrial and hazardous waste treatment and management.
Chavez was awarded the 2019 Presidential Lingkod Bayan Award for his trailblazing work on the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in severe leptospirosis.
The Singapore-based Asian Scientist Magazine is an award-winning science and technology magazine that highlights the “best and most exciting” science and technology stories from Asia to a global audience.
