Malacañang on Thursday said it welcomes the proposal of Senator Francis Pangilinan to investigate the national security implications of the entry of four million Chinese into the country since 2017.
On Wednesday, Pangilinan filed Senate Resolution No. (SRN) 558, requesting the Senate to investigate China’s increased presence in the country.
“Ang Presidente naman po ay nirerespeto ang kapangyarihan ng Senado na magsagawa ng imbestigasyon, in aid of legislation, and by way of oversight, sa kahit anong programa ng gobyerno,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a virtual presser.
“So, that’s welcome po,” added Roque.
In his SRN 558, Pangilinan stressed the need to look into whether the influx of Chinese nationals here is an “orchestrated soft invasion” of the country.
“Soft invasion” is the term used by former intelligence chief of the United States Navy’s Pacific Fleet Captain Jim Fanell to describe China’s strategy of “invading” cash-strapped neighbors.
