Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles stressed the need for Congress to pass a national land use policy to ensure the country’s food security.
In a Facebook open forum over the weekend, Nograles underscored the importance of a National Land Use Act and reiterated the administration’s support for its passage.
“When we talk about food production, food availability, food price stability, and helping small farmers, land is important. When unregulated and unrestricted land conversion happens, food security is threatened,” the chairman of the Task Force on Zero Hunger said.
Nograles said the unchecked conversion of agricultural lands into non-agricultural uses could adversely impact the agricultural sector and food security will be negatively impacted.
In his State of the Nation Address last year, President Rodrigo Duterte urged the legislators to urgently pass the NLUA to “meet the demands of the new investors coming in” and “serve as bases for local government units in crafting respective development plans and help disperse economic activities to the countryside.”
