2017 pa may babala! Gina Lopez warned quarrying at Marikina watershed will cause flooding in NCR. Ulysses proved her right

A 2017 Facebook post of the late former Environment Secretary Gina Lopez is now going viral after several parts of Metro Manila and nearby provinces experienced heavy flooding when Typhoon Ulysses hit on November 12.

Lopez warned three years ago that Metro Manila will experience floods as a result of the quarrying activities at Marikina watershed. She said it was important that the watershed was rehabilitated as it was the “first line of defense” of Marikina, Quezon City, Pasig, Antipolo, Cainta and San Mateo against rainwater coming from the mountains.

The former Environment Secretary shared photos of the watershed she took during an aerial inspection on September 20, 2017. The photos showed swaths of brown land and a smattering of trees.

“[T]hese are photos I took near the Marikina Watershed… THAT QUARRYING IS ILLEGAL BECAUSE IT IS IN A WATERSHED!!! IT SHOULD NOT BE THERE BECAUSE IT WILL CAUSE FLOODING IN METRO MANILA!!!” Lopez said.

She said that as long as quarrying continues at Marikina watershed, water from Pasig River will be brown.

“And it will become more and more shallow—and it will cause flooding in Metro Manila!!” Lopez said.

Based on the flooding experienced in Metro Manila during Ulysses, it’s clear Lopez’s warning wasn’t heeded.
