Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director General Gerald Bantag has managed to get over 10,000 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) to remove their gang tattoos.
The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said that as of Thursday (Nov. 12) there are a total of 10,274 inmates in its prison facilities nationwide who participated in its Oplen Tatak Bura.
“Initiated by USEC Gerald Q Bantag, this program aims to discourage PDL’s membership in gangs and lessen the culture of revenge and violence because of gang extremism or blind loyalty to their group,” the BuCor said in a statement.
Among its prison facilities, the BuCor said only the Davao Prison and Penal Farm (DPPF) had no inmate who participated in Oplan Tatak Bura.
“DPPF (Davao Prison and Penal Farm) has been gang free for some time and doesn’t need to erase gang tattoos,” it explained.
“However, sustained monitoring is needed to stop the emergence of groups in the camps,” it added.
Bantag started the launched Oplan Tatak Bura last Oct. 28 following the Oct. 9 riot at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City where nine PDLs died and seven hurt.
However, this did not stop a repeat of the riot on Nov. 9 where four inmates were killed and 62 hurt.
