Duterte defends Magat Dam water release

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte defended on Sunday the release of water from the Magat Dam, which was partly blamed for the severe flooding in Cagayan Valley Region.

Cagayan Governor Manuel Mamba earlier said he may file a complaint against the management of Magat Dam for releasing water at the height of typhoon “Ulysses.”

“You have to release it otherwise we’ll have a catastrophe,” Duterte said in an interview after his situation briefing in Pili, Camarines Sur.

“Every dam in this world pagkapuno na yung tubig ire-release talaga yan, otherwise, magkalat yan pag nasira,” he added.

For its part, the National Irrigation Administration-Magat River Integrated Irrigation System said it has been releasing water from the Magat Reservoir since November 9, two days before Ulysses made its first landfall in Patnanungan, Quezon.

Then, additional gates had been gradually opened as water inflow from its watersheds continually increased.
