Duterte, PM Morrison affirm stronger PH-Australia alliance

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte spoke on telephone today with Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison, and discussed cooperation through bilateral, regional and other multilateral channels.

In a statement, Malacañang said that Duterte welcomed Australia’s interest to enhance its relations with Asean on maritime security, countering marine plastic debris, counterterrorism, and cybersecurity, which are priority issues of the Philippines.

The Chief Executive also lauded the Australian government’s pledge of support for Asean’s coronavirus response and recovery efforts, citing the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership and Asean-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Area as key frameworks that could stimulate economic growth in the region.

He likewise noted the growing ties between the two nations as he called for the adoption of a Plan of Action to further implement the Joint Declaration of the Philippines-Australia Comprehensive Partnership.

Meanwhile, Duterte thanked Australia for its formal manifestation before the United Nations 2016 arbitral tribunal ruling that invalidated China’s claims in the West Philippines Sea.

“We consider Australia a close partner in upholding international law, including UNCLOS, and in promoting maritime security,” he said.

For his part, Morrison committed to further strengthen Australia-Philippines cooperation and partnership on areas of mutual interest and welcomed continuing developments that showed the value and strength of Philippines-Australia ties.
