Go for it! Duterte gives nod to DENR’s flood control initiatives

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte has directed the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to proceed with its plan to control flooding in Cagayan Valley and spare the region from devastating flood waters in the future.

During a situation briefing in Tuguegarao City Sunday, Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu said there was a Japan International Cooperation Agency recommendation to widen a portion of the Magapit River to accommodate more flood water to pass through.

“Go for it. I will support you and shorten the process of the papers,” Duterte told Cimatu.

The secretary said the DENR also plans to dredge some 30 kilometers from the mouth of Cagayan River going upstream, which is now affected with heavy siltation.

They are also looking at implementing a massive tree planting program to prevent flooding in the region with the help of local government units and the private sector, he added.

“I will support you all the way,” said Duterte.
