Nasa huli pagsisisi: Angel Locsin wishes people believed Gina Lopez’s warning on environmental destruction

Angel Locsin could only wish people took the late former Environment Secretary Gina Lopez seriously when she warned that the poor will suffer the most when the environment is destroyed.

In an Instagram post Sunday (November 15), Locsin reposted a video clip originally shared by Kim Atienza on Lopez’s tirade following the rejection of her appointment by the Commission on Appointments (CA) on May 3, 2017.

After failing to get the CA’s nod, Lopez held a press conference at the Senate, where she warned that “everything” will be killed if the environment was killed.

“One third of the Filipino… depends on our natural resources. Sinong nagdurusa pag nawasak ang kalikasan? Sino?! Yung mahihirap! And whose duty it is to protect the environment? The government,” she said.

Taking a potshot at CA members with mining interests, Lopez said: “And when you make decisions based on business interests, you have shirked your responsibility. You have lost the moral ascendancy to rule the government because to you, business interests and mining are more important than the welfare of the people.”

Locsin remarked about Lopez’s statement: “If only they believed you, Ms. Gina Lopez.”

The former Environment Secretary’s warnings on environmental destruction are going viral following the devastation caused by Typhoons Rolly and Ulysses in several parts of Luzon this month. Lopez died in August 2019.
