Kulang na kulang kasi: Ping eyes amendments to PNP Law to raise entry-level pay for police lawyers, docs, chemists

Sen. Panfilo Lacson is eyeing amendments to the Philippine National Police law to raise entry-level salaries that would allow the recruitment of additional lawyers, doctors and chemists.

Lacson, who headed the PNP from 1999 to 2001, also noted new PNP chief Debold Sinas had requested for legislation in this regard.

“We can amend the PNP Law to introduce that amendment so they can recruit more lawyers, more doctors and more chemists,” Lacson said after his interpellation of the Department of Interior and Local Government’s 2021 budget.

He noted those who want to serve in the PNP’s legal service could be deterred by the low pay. “So the Chief PNP is requesting for a legislation in this regard,” he said.

But he said this can be done only through legislation and not a mere special provision in the budget.

On the other hand, Lacson noted the PNP presently has only 125 chemists to attend to 300,000 cases.

“You can just imagine sa court hearings pa lang ubos oras nila at kung di sila maka-attend, contempt ang aabutin nila sa court. This is the predicament the PNP is in right now. I promised the Chief, PNP at our end we’ll do our part to introduce that legislation,” he said.
