President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday summoned to Malacañang the immigration officials who were allegedly involved in the “pastillas” bribery scandal in Malacañang.
Duterte distributed pastillas, a local sweet delicacy wrapped in paper, to the 44 Bureau of Immigration (BI) personnel, except that money had been rolled inside, according to Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra.
Guevarra told reporters that Duterte asked the erring officials to eat the money or “give it to the first beggar you see.”
Last month, the Office of the Ombudsman placed the officials under six-month preventive suspension for their alleged involvement in the pastillas scam.
Under the “pastillas” scheme, some BI personnel receive bribes in exchange for the seamless entry of Chinese nationals who flew to Manila to work in Philippine firms engaging in offshore gambling.
Also present at the meeting were Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente, and National Bureau of Investigation Director Eric Distor.
