Palace backs designation of vaccine czar Galvez: ‘It’s more of a logistic challenge than a medical challenge’

By Prince Golez

Malacañang defended on Tuesday the appointment of Secretary Carlito Galvez, Jr., a former Armed Forces chief, as vaccine czar, saying his designation is “more of a logistics challenge than a medical challenge.”

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque issued the statement following concerns that the vaccine czar should have vast experience in public health and vaccination.

The vaccine operation will entail logistics, said Roque, noting that managerial skills are required for the job.

“Ang medical issue involved dito kung safe po yung vaccine at yan naman po ay tututukan ng FDA (Food and Drug Administration) dahil bagamat merong registration ang mga bakuna na makukuha sa kanilang home countries kinakailangan pag-aralan pa rin po dito yan sa Pilipinas ng ating FDA,” he said during a televised briefing.

On Monday, President Rodrigo Duterte named Galvez, also the chief implementer of the National Task Force against Covid-19, as the vaccine czar who would take charge in the negotiation, manufacture, production, and distribution of vaccines.
