Palace respects proposal for mail-in voting in PH

By Prince Golez

MalacaƱang on Monday said it respects the proposal of Commissioner Rowena Guanzon of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for mail voting in the May 2022 elections.

“We respect that recommendation coming as it does from a legal luminary within the Comelec and under the Constitution, it is tasked of course with the supervision and conduct of elections,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a televised briefing.

Roque, however, said he is not sure if there is still a need to amend the Omnibus Election Code to allow mail-in voting in the next polls.

“Pero ang hindi ko lang po sigurado kung kinakailangan pang maamyendahan iyong Omnibus Election Code para ma-include iyong mail voting. Pero we leave that to the wisdom of the Comelec,” he added.

Earlier, Senator Imee Marcos, also chairperson of the Committee on Electoral Reforms and People’s Participation, filed Senate Bill No. 1870 seeking to allow senior citizens, pregnant, persons with disabilities, and indigenous peoples to vote by mail, citing the inaccessibility of polling places.
