Christmas is family time.
Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo Puyat terribly misses her son Vito and wishes he will come home for Christmas.
Vito, involved in environmental protection research in El Nido, Palawan, has been staying in the province since the coronavirus lockdown last March. The UK-educated Romulo scion has not been home ever since.
In an Instagram post, the country’s tourism chief hopes to reunite with his son on Christmas. Puyat is a widow and a mother of two kids.
“A close friend of our family, my Tita Deedee asked me what would make me happy this Christmas. My answer? My son coming home for Christmas
” she said in an Instagram post.
“The last time Vito came back home was last February. He was working outside of Manila and was stranded in the province during the lockdown,” she said.
At the height of the strict lockdown in March, Puyat said her son was unable to join take the government’s sweeper flights from Palawan to Manila.
“Though the DOT sponsored the sweeper flights for stranded foreign tourists last March, we couldn’t include him because he wasn’t a foreign national,” she said.
“Last May, the DOT also sponsored sweeper flights for stranded local tourists but again he couldn’t join because he wasn’t a tourist,” she said.
As authorities start to reopen the economy, Puyat grabbed the chance to see her son a few times when she visited Palawan in recent months. The mother-and-son reunion however has been short.
“Whenever work brought me to Palawan this past year, we would manage to see each other, even if not for very long. His schedule was sometimes as busy as mine so we didn’t have much time together,” she said.
This coming holiday season, the Cabinet official is hoping Christmas will bring her family together.
“For this season though, there’s nothing quite like having our whole family together. Like any mother, that’s all I want for Christmas,” she said.
“I pray that every Filipino gets that wish too,” she added.
