Government troops who protect the people from the threat of the New People’s Army especially during the holidays deserve at least a medal, Sen. Panfilo Lacson said late Friday.
Lacson cited in particular the troops’ achievement of neutralizing at least seven NPAs in Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat earlier this week.
“Paging GHQ. Medals are in order. Away from their families during the holiday season, our soldiers continue to risk their lives to keep our communities safe,” Lacson, who chairs the Senate’s defense committee, said on his Twitter account.

He cited a report indicating at least seven NPAs were killed earlier this week when soldiers foiled their attempt to mark the 52nd founding anniversary of the Communist Party of the Philippines on Dec. 26.
The government has decided not to hold a holiday ceasefire with the NPAs this year, citing the lack of sincerity by CPP founding chairman Jose Maria Sison.
National security adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr. said they are focusing on peace engagements with insurgents, but at the local level.
