Death penalty revival up to Congress – Palace

By Prince Golez

Malacañang said it would leave to Congress the matter of reinstating the death penalty in the country.

President Rodrigo Duterte wants to bring back the death penalty in the Philippines but lawmakers should make the final decision, according to Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque.

“Malinaw po ang stand ng Presidente diyan. Pabor po ang Presidente sa death penalty lalung-lalo na po sa wide-scale drug trafficking pero nasa kamay na po iyan ng mga mambabatas,” Roque said during a virtual presser Tuesday.

Several senators renewed push for the reimposition of the death penalty following the shooting incident involving a police officer in Paniqui, Tarlac that led to the death of a mother and her son.

Senior Master Sergeant Jonel Nuezca is facing double murder charges after he shot dead his unarmed neighbors, Sonya and Frank Gregorio over the firing of a “boga.”
