President Rodrigo Duterte said he understood why the glitches in the radio frequency identification device (RFID) system angered Valenzuela Mayor Rex Gatchalian.
Gatchalian earlier suspended the business permit of toll operator North Luzon Expressway Corp. due to issues on its RFID system that caused heavy traffic in expressways.
“The control of the traffic is always left to the local government. Local government iyan,” Duterte said in a televised address Wednesday.
“So nandoon siya si mayor galit na galit and I could understand his… with all the conundrum of taking place. Pati ako magagalit talaga and I understand this burst of anger, which is justified para matauhan kayo,” he added.
The President also asked “incompetent” Toll Regulatory Board officials to resign, saying that they should have not allowed the toll operators to implement the faulty RFID installation system.
“If you cannot perform what is expected of you, then the best that you can do for decency sake, resign, and do not wait to be fired because masakit iyan, mapahiya ka,” he said.
