Malacañang on Monday opposed the order of Philippine National Police chief Gen. Debold Sinas to use “yantok” or rattan sticks to reprimand people who violate social distancing protocols.
But, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said that law enforcers may use the rattan sticks to measure physical distancing.
“Hindi pupuwede yan pang hit o pang palo dahil hindi naman po yan pinapayagan sa ating batas at regulasyon ng PNP,” Roque told reporters.
“Pupuwede siguro to measure social distancing, to make sure one meter. Pero hindi po yan para pang palo ng mga taumbayan,” he added.
At a Laging Handa public briefing last December 4, Joint Task Force Covid-19 Shield chief Lt. Gen. Cesar Hawthorne Binag said police officers acting as social distancing patrollers have been ordered by Sinas to use rattan sticks to enforce social distancing protocols for the holiday season.
