Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro “Teddyboy” Locsin Jr. is pulling all stops so the Philippines can secure Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible after Health Secretary Francisco Duque III dragged his feet in negotiations with the American pharmaceutical company.
Locsin tweeted Saturday (December 19) that he has talked to United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo about the purchase of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine.
“Great phone conversation with Mike Pompeo last night. Lotsa laughs at others. But on the most serious note I asked him to help Babe and I get back even a fraction of the 10 million doses of Pfizer after someone dropped the ball. He’ll give it his best try. Babe’s securing Moderna,” he said, referring to Philippine Ambassador to the US Jose Manuel “Babe” Romualdez.
Senator Panfilo Lacson has named Duque as the Cabinet Secretary who “dropped the ball” in negotiations with Pfizer, which would’ve allowed the Philippines to secure as much as 10 million doses of its COVID-19 vaccines by January 2021.
Lacson said Duque “failed to work on the necessary documentary requirements” needed for the confidentiality disclosure agreement with Pfizer.
Duque, however, insisted that negotiations with Pfizer were ongoing and the pharmaceutical company didn’t give any timeline for completing requirements for the vaccine purchase.
