The country’s COVID-19 vaccine czar has assured that no politiko can earn kickbacks in the purchase of vaccines as negotiations continue with foreign pharmaceutical firms.
In a virtual briefing Saturday (December 19), Sec. Carlito Galvez Jr. said funds for the purchase of COVID-19 vaccines will come from the Asian Development Bank and World Bank.
“Wala po sa Cabinet members, wala pong government officials na may access nito except (the) Secretary of Finance,” he said.
Galvez said he has already allayed the fears of some senators that someone in government will unduly get rich due to the procurement of COVID-19 vaccines, saying Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez’s integrity is unquestionable.
“Sinasabi ko sa kanila: huwag kayong maghusga, kasi hindi niyo nakikita ang integrity ng ADB, integrity ng World Bank at tsaka integrity ng DOF natin at tsaka integrity namin ang nakasalalay dito,” he said.
Senator Francis Pangilinan earlier warned that “kickvacc” or the prospect of commissions might be delaying the government’s procurement of COVID-19 vaccines.
Health Secretary Francisco Duque III has denied any irregularity in the purchase of vaccines, saying President Rodrigo Duterte will not tolerate it.
