‘Mask is more than enough:’ Ejercito warns vs ‘fatal’ face shield for cyclists

It can bring more harm than good.

Former Senator JV Ejercito has opposed to the proposed mandatory use of face shield by cyclists and other fitness buffs supposedly as protection against coronavirus.

Ejercito, in a Facebook post, raised concern that wearing face shield over a mask could be fatal for the people trying to stay healthy during the pandemic. The former senator, a bike enthusiast, said the use of face mask is already enough to protect against COVID-19 transmission.

“Di po ako sang ayon sa pag require ng faceshield sa mga nagbibisikleta at nag exercise.
This might cause Hypoxia or lack of oxygen. While breathing hard, intake of oxygen is minimized with mask and now with faceshield pa. This can be fatal. So in other words, this can bring more harm than good,” he said.

Ejercito said face shields should instead be required for people staying in enclosed or crowded places to limit COVID transission.

“Face shields should be required in enclosed and crowded places. There is already a mask that is required anyway,” he said.

The former lawmaker said he hopes the government’s pandemic response task force would think twice before imposing such requirement that can be dangerous to cyclists.
