Senate Majority Leader Migz Zubiri said on Sunday he understands where President Rodrigo Duterte is coming from when he threatened to push through with terminating the Visiting Forces Agreement unless the United States ensured 20 million Covid-19 vaccines for the Philippines.
“Siguro medyo naunahan na tayo ng ibang bansa, kaya nakikita ko ang frustration ng pangulo,” he said in a DZBB interview.
“Dapat may downpayment yata dyan kaya nagalit si Presidente. Itong manufacturers gusto nila downpayment muna kaya nakikita ko ang galit nya kaya out of frustration ng Pangulo sinabi niya na mawawala ang Visiting Forces Agreement,” Zubiri said.
He said he hopes Foreign Affairs Secretary Teddy Boy Locsin and Philippine Ambassador to the US Babe Romualdez will be able to secure the Pfizer vaccines in the ongoing negotiations.
“But nevertheless marami naman tayo alternative. Meron sa India, kailangan ng two doses only P366 per person. Talagang mura. Meron tayong options. Pfizer is one of them but we should look at others,” Zubiri said.
“Ang apela ko pumili tayo ng bakuna na effective and yet cost effective, di ganun kamahal para marami tayong mabili,” he said.
