President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday urged the Filipino faithful to draw strength from the holy life of the Virgin Mary to remain “steadfast, joyous, and hopeful” despite the many challenges facing the country.
In his message issued on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, Duterte wished the public a solemn and meaningful observance of the religious event.
“Today, the Catholic community celebrates the purity of Mary’s birth, a characteristic that made her worthy to become the mother of Christ. Beyond the narrative of this doctrine, this feast is also an affirmation of the virtues of a mother’s pure and unconditional love.” the President said.
“May he Immaculate Conception guide us all, whatever faith we may hold, to be kind to one another during these trying times as we look forward to a better future in this life and beyond,” he also said.
In 2017, Duterte signed Republic Act 10966, declaring December 8 as a special non-working holiday in commemoration of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.
